Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

A journey in Scripture and song from
Old Testament prophecy to the celebration of the Nativity

Sunday, December 21, 2008
Five o’clock in the afternoon

On Sunday, December 21, the Sunday before Christmas, the Saint Paul’s Church family and friends from throughout the area will gather once again for our cherished holiday tradition: the annual presentation of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.

The service of Lessons and Carols dates from 1880, when the Bishop of Truro, England drew up a service of Biblical lessons and Christmas carols for use on Christmas Eve. In 1918, the service was adapted for use at King’s College, Cambridge. Through Holy Scripture and music, Lessons and Carols tells the story of the miracle of the Nativity, from Old Testament prophecy through the Birth of Christ.

Our service at Saint Paul’s follows the King’s College format, with the use of the nine traditional Scripture readings, each followed by a carol anthem or a congregational carol. This year, the carols sung by our Saint Paul’s Choir will be enhanced by the participation of members of the Virginia Symphony: Sherie Lake Aguirre, oboe; Barbara Chapman, harp; and Robert Cross and Tim Bishop, percussion. Allen Shaffer, Music Director of Christ and Saint Luke’s Church, Norfolk, is the guest organist.

Following the service, a festive holiday reception will be held in the Parish Hall.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is one of the most beloved services in the Anglican tradition, a service of pure joy that anticipates the beginning of our faith community’s celebration of Christmas. I look forward to welcoming you to this year’s Festival, as together, we join to proclaim the news of Christ’s birth!

My Faith, My Life:
A Teen’s Guide to the Episcopal Church

Jenifer Gamber, the author of My Faith, My Life:  A Teen’s Guide to the Episcopal Church, will be at Saint Paul’s on January 31 and February 1, of 2009. Jenifer is a member of the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, PA., and has worked passionately with youth for many years.  Jenifer and her husband have two teen age children.  Her presentation, along with dialogue from those gathered, is so down to earth, and yet filled with zest and knowledge of teen agers.  Many in this diocese have heard Jenifer speak and have read her book.

If you are a youth leader, parents of youth, and for those of you who have affirmed our youth over the years, this Saturday and Sunday is for you.  On Sunday, February 1, Jenifer will spend time with our youth.  There will be more details as the time draws near, but knowing many of you will want to attend and also have quickly filled calendars, I wanted you to know about this event in advance.
